Specimen Type

Bone marrow aspirate

2 Lavendar EDTA (1 peripheral blood, 1 initial bone marrow aspirate)

1 Dark Green Top Sodium Heparin (second aspirate)

2 Sterile Containers (1 second aspirate, 1 biopsy core)

*AFB and Fungal culture request: Sterile tube containing 1cc sterile saline and one drop sterile heparin

1mL peripheral blood in a lavendar EDTA for CBC/Retic/Diff.

Initial aspirate in a lavendar EDTA.

Second aspirate split between dark green top sodium heparin and sterile container.

*AFB ane Fungal culture request: a few drops of aspirate into the prepare tube

Deliver all routine bone marrow containers to Histology ASAP. Call the department with advance notice of the collection procedure whenever able.

*Deliver AFB/Fungal culture container to Send Outs ASAP.

24 hours Monday-Thursday

Fix the biopsy core in 10% formalin prior to transport. Transport specimens at 20-25°C.
