Stability
Deliver fresh specimens to Histology ASAP at 20-25oC. As soon as able, preserve the specimen with 10% formalin at a 10:1 ratio (formalin:tissue).
*Breast tissue: Formalin fixation must occur within 1 HOUR of tissue collection. Any large excision must be oriented and incised circa 75% of its thickness near the middle of the specimen in a plane perpendicular to its long axis to allow for formalin exposure to central tissue.
*Frozen sections: Must remain UNFIXED. Submit on a sponge moisted with saline if a small tissue. This specimen must be handeled by Pathology ASAP - please call the department with advance notice of collection.
*Cytogenetic, Flow, Lymph and Muscle biopsy: Deliver to Histology fresh. Please give advance notice of collection.
*Tissue for crystals: Deliver to Histology fresh. Store at 2-8oC if after hours.
Transfer Instructions
Preserve appropriate specimens with 10% formalin in a 10:1 ratio prior to transport.
Transport unfixed specimens ASAP at 2-8°C.
